Chapter Members attend 39th Annual ISEE Conference in Ft. Worth Texas

Nearly 1,300 people from around the globe gathered in Fort Worth, Texas, from Saturday, Feb. 9 to Wednesday, Feb. 13 for the 39th Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique.

But it is Only Waste Rock.

Schroder Island Blasting

In construction blasting every now and again particularly unique projects come along.  This fall when taking a boat on lake of the woods to look at a blasting project on an island, it was clear this would be such a project.  Out in the big water of lake of the woods there is an island called Lunatic Island, a natural V shaped notch in the rock allowed for a small boat to dock.

The Lake Superior Chapter of the Internatinoal Society of Explosive Engineers is pleased to present scholarships to the following students:

  • Adam Brewer of Utica, SD, a junior at South Dakota State University majoring in Mine Engineering, is awarded $2000.
1918 Sliver Mine Disaster

The Virginia Ore Mining Company had a bank of mangan- -
iferous ore on the east side of Sliver Mine pit. This mine is
located in lot 5-58~-17. It appears that the ore extended back
under the bank further than they expected and last fall and
winter they stripped back an additional area so that they could'
mine out this manganiferous ore by the open pit method.

2012 Presidents letter

Lake Superior Chapter of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, I am your new president. I hope the New Year is treating everyone well. We had great attendance to our annual Christmas party. The board and I have been working hard to put together a fantastic schedule for Minnblast this year held on March 14 – 15 at the Coats Hotel.

Bad geology and the end results. What would you do?

There is nothing more satisfying than a perfectly loaded and timed shot that goes as expected. Well, there might be a couple of more satisfying things come to think of it. But every once in a while things just don't go as expected. A couple of those occasions come to mind.

Chapter Christmas Party

The Chapter Christmas Party was held after the New Year for the first time in many years. Besides the benefit of a less hectic pace of a post-holiday date; we also had the pleasure of introducing the Chapter scholarship winner. The party is normally held in early December, which is 'crunch time' for students preparing for finals as the fall semester comes to a close.

Early February found chapter member, Jack Eloranta, at 15,000 feet elevation
at a gold mine in the Andes. Pucamarca is a new gold mine operated by
Minsur. Lima is a six-hour flight from Atlanta. Another two-hour flight
